Road repaving for 2022 season in East Providence draws closer to the finish

Several more streets are expected to be completed before weather ends effort

EAST PROVIDENCE  — The East Providence Department of Public Works/Highway Division recently updated the remaining list of roads to be repaved during the rest of the 2022 construction season as well as those streets planned to be refurbished come next spring and the start of the 2023 period.

The administration of Mayor Bob DaSilva was asked to do so by the City Council during its second meeting of last month, October 18.

How much longer the 2022 season lasts in pretty much weather dependent or whenever the area suffers a significant and extended deep freeze. Contractors will usually continue to work as far into November as possible.

The road repairs being completed this season are the culmination of the $10 million the previous edition of the City Council allocated in 2018 for use over the ensuing five budget cycles, Fiscal Years 2018-2022. The legislation was proposed by former Ward 3 Councilor Joe Botelho.

Pawtucket Hot Mix has been the lead contractor throughout the repaving effort and continues to be so next season.

The current council, in the capital improvements section of the mayor’s draft budget for next fiscal year, allocated another $1 million towards the continuation of the effort.

Concurrently, an effort to improve sidewalks around the city continues late this construction season. The replacement of walkways with asphalt on both sides of Pawtucket Avenue from Warren Avenue south to Wampanoag Trail is well started and should be finished shortly.

The city has long sought to not only have the sidewalks on Pawtucket Avenue repaired, but also the extremely busy thoroughfare to be repaved as well. However, the street is state-owned and is not part of the existing “RhodeWorks” package, which in its current form is due to run through at least 2025.

With that in mind, the council, led by current Ward 3 seat holder Nate Cahoon, sought state permission to address the situation in the short term at least.

The sidewalks are a separate project initiated by the sitting council in the form of a separate $1 million set-aside in the Fiscal Year 21 capital improvements budget.

Hartford Paving, of Johnston, won that bid, which also includes the sides on Fort  and Mercer Streets around the Hennessey Elementary School near Pierce Memorial Complex.

In addition, Hartford Paving is contracted by National Grid to meet city guidelines to repave roads disturbed during the recent spate of utility upgrades.

The following roads have been totally repaved or were in the process of being completed as of last week:

Bridgham St. to Pawtucket Ave.
