Middle school students to perform 'Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.'

Barrington Middle School students will perform "Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr." this weekend.

There will be four shows, each will be held at Barrington High School:

“A” Cast performances — Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m.

“B” Cast performances — Saturday, March 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 4 at 1 p.m.

“In many respects, the 1920s made the America we live in today. It was a time of dramatic change as more and more Americans moved from farms to cities," said Pete Bilderback, president of Arts Alive’s board of directors. "Many of the social and cultural tensions that came to the fore during that decade remain with us today, and ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.’ is a great space for middle schoolers to explore the fraught question of what it means to be ‘modern'.”

Dena Davis, the artistic director for Arts Alive!, will direct the play.

“We have enjoyed exploring the wild and wonderful roaring 20's; the movement; dialect; art; fashion; and elevated comedy, while toe-tapping our way through the incredible music," she said. "As always, it is our goal to create a safe environment to explore individual creativity and expression and give kids a place to be a bigger version of themselves.”

Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults, and can be purchased online at www.artsalivebarrington.org, or at the door before each performance.

In addition, audience members can purchase raffle tickets for a Broadway weekend getaway for two. At $10 per ticket, the winner will be able to pick tickets to a Broadway show of his or her choice (“The Lion King”, “Wicked”, or “Dear Evan Hansen”), with flexible dates between June 1 and Oct. 31. The prize also includes a two-night stay at a four-star hotel in Times Square, and a $100 Visa card.

The drawing will be held on Sunday June 10, after the Hampden Meadows School performance of “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” at Barrington High School. The winner does not need to be present at the drawing to claim the prize.
