Robert Howarth Clifton, M.D., 93, Westport

Robert Howarth Clifton, M.D., 93, of Andover and Westport, Mass., Naples, Florida and Lebanon, NH, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2018.

Bob is survived by daughters Judy Gessner (Bill), Nancy Collier (John Harper (Gary) and Betsy St Amand (Russell); grandchildren Chris (Cara Kidd) and Eric Gessner, Tom (Andrea) and Rob Collier, Benjamin and Gregory St. Amand; and great grandchildren Isabella and Benjamin Gessner.

Born and raised in Fall River, Bob attended Dartmouth College, graduating with the class of 1946. He received his DDS from Harvard Dental School in 1948, and his medical degree in 1950 from Harvard Medical School. He was a medical officer in the Army and Navy. Bob and Dorothy Swett Clifton were married in 1950; they celebrated their 61st anniversary before Dot’s passing in 2011

Over the course of his 32-year career, he practiced urology, retiring from Urology Associates in 1988.

Bob’s hobbies included traveling, lobstering, playing golf, including a round at Acoaxet Club on his 93rd birthday with family, and an extraordinary social life. He never lost his intellectual curiosity.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
