Rocco J. DiMatteo, 94, of Barrington

Rocco J. DiMatteo, 94, formerly of Brow Street, Barrington, died on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018. He was the husband of the late Eleanor A. (D’Allesandro) DiMatteo. 

A lifelong resident of Barrington, he was the son of the late John and Concetta (Giannattasio) DiMatteo. 

Mr. DiMatteo was a machinist for the Mobil Oil Company for 40 years before retiring in 1986. 

Rocco was a communicant of Holy Angels Church and was a former member of the Barrington DAV. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Montaup Country Club for over 45 years. He invented a ball marking device for golfing. 

Mr. DiMatteo was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. 

He is survived by his children, Susan O’Donnell of Bristol, Robert DiMatteo and his wife Patricia of Riverside and David DiMatteo and his husband Fabiano Delima M.D. of Boston, Mass.; a brother, Alphonse DiMatteo of Barrington; three sisters, Rose Lombardi of Warren, Mary Chianese of Seekonk, Mass., and Irene Ventresca of North Providence; four grandchildren, Kathleen, Kevin, Andrew and Alicia and one great-granddaughter, Taylor. He was the brother of the late Anna Mansi, Assunta, Anthony and Carmen DiMatteo. 

His funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018 from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside at 8:45 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Angels Church, Maple Avenue, Barrington at 10 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Santa Maria del Campo Cemetery, Upland Way, Barrington. Calling hours are Friday 6-8 p.m. Flowers are respectfully omitted. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
