Five of the Roger Williams University’s greatest athletes and one of its greatest teams enjoyed another night in the spotlight last week, stepping into the hall of fame.

The 2016 Roger Williams University Athletic Hall of Fame class was inducted during ceremonies at the RWU Campus Recreation Center.

This year’s class includes:

  • Antoine Bell (2007, soccer): Bell finished his career fifth all-time in goals scored (38) and seventh in points (85). He was a 2007 NSCAA All-American, two-time All-New England selection, and three-time All-Commonwealth Coast Conference honoree. He was named CCC Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007.
  • Liam Carr (2000, men’s basketball): Carr ended his career as Roger Williams’ third leading scorer with 1,653 points. He holds the school record for career field goals made with 657. He was a three time All-CCC selection.
  • Cory DeBias (2005, wrestling): DeBias was a 2003 NCAA wrestling All-American and finished in third place at the NCAA Tournament. He ended the season with a 32-3 record for a .914 winning percentage, setting a new single-season school mark.
  • Deborah Konuch (1985, women’s basketball and women’s volleyball): Konuch is one of the greatest RWU female athletes of all-time, starring in women’s volleyball and basketball. She earned NAIA All-District honors in both sports, becoming the first RWU female athlete to do so. She was also the first player in RWU women’s basketball history to surpass 1,000 points, finishing her career with 1,162 points.
  • Dwight Datcher (1974, men’s basketball, and former RWU men’s basketball coach and athletic director): Datcher ended his playing career as Roger Williams’ all-time leading scorer with 1,486 points. He is one of three players in program history to have his jersey number (25) retired. He also served as RWU head men’s basketball coach from 1985-1992, and was the school’s athletic director from 1989-92.
  • The 2001-02 women’s tennis team: Members of the tennis team included Jennifer Asselin, Laura Callahan, Sara Coleman, Krista Fisk, Rebecca Joseph, Julie Manuck, Caitlin Marshall, Jennifer McMahon, Kelly Morrissey, Lauren Murley, Trisha Spillane, Halley Werner, and head coach Doug Chapman.

RWU director of athletics, intramurals and recreation Davie Kemmy remarked on how five years of Hall of Fame inductions at the university pays tribute to the origins of sports at the school.

“It is always special when you can remember, appreciate and honor the greats of the past,” he said. “All too often, our lives get rolling so fast we forget to stop and reflect back on those who laid the foundation for Roger Williams athletics, and tonight is a special night in that we are able to do that. Their accomplishments and dedication to RWU is truly something special.”
