EAST PROVIDENCE — Two Rumford Little League All Star teams captured district championships on consecutive nights over the weekend in city.

The Junior Division All Stars concluded an unbeaten run to the District 2 championship Saturday night, July 18, in city at Glenlyon Field with a 7-3 victory over visiting Tiverton.

Rumford won all four of its outings in the tournament. The locals opened with a 4-2 win over cross-city foe Riverside then defeated Pine View 8-2 before getting the better of the same Tiverton side 7-5 in the winners' bracket final Wednesday night, July 15.

Saturday, Rumford scored its first run in the bottom of the third. Zach White led off the frame with a walk and later scored on a Matt Pimental single. The locals added three more in the fourth. In succession, Jared Landry, Colby Paiva, Elias Eberman and White drew walks. Ben Kailher and Pimental followed with singles. Rumford then tacked on three more tallies in the sixth. White drew a lead-off walk. Kailher also received a free pass. Pimental (4-for-4) then had his fourth hit of the night. Warren Smith and Nate Mottur also singled in the frame.

Paiva was the winning pitcher, throwing 81 pitches in five-plus innings of work. Kailher closed out the win with 19 pitches in his inning plus on the hill.

The rest of the Rumford roster includes Jayden Barber, Nathan Bettencourt, Nathan Pimentel, Sam Stone and Ryan Wood. Steve McDonald is the manager. Bob Long and Chris Kailher are the coaches.

Rumford advances to the state tournament in Cumberland at Bentley Field against District 4 champion Glocester Saturday, July 25, at 1 p.m.
