Runnins River Culvert Project readies to commence in East Providence

Will force closure/detour at Warren Avenue and County Street

EAST PROVIDENCE — Stephen Coutu, Director of Public Works in East Providence, announced earlier this week the long-planned Runnins River Culvert Project at the city’s border with Seekonk, Massachusetts will commence on July 30.

The contractor for the project, East Providence-based J.H. Lynch & Sons Inc., will be closing the roadway at Warren Avenue and Country Street for a 30-day period to install two new culverts measuring three-feet high by seven-feet wide. The culverts are precast concrete boxes and will be placed to the east of the existing arch culvert under Warren Avenue/County Street at the Runnins River crossing. The project was designed by the engineering firm, of Woodard & Curran.

During the 30-day work period the roadway will be closed, requiring motorists to seek alternate routes around the point of construction, the very busy throughway connecting area residents to and from Route 6. An approved Rhode Island Department of Transportation detour plan has been established.

According to Mr. Coutu, “The objective of this project is to reduce the frequency and extent of flooding within the State Street neighborhood.”

The city received funding for the project back in November 2017. East Providence was awarded a matching grant from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management in the amount for $544,025 through the Narragansett Bay and Watershed Restoration Bond Fund.
