PORTSMOUTH — The collegiate rugby tournament known as “Beast of the East” descended once again on Glen Farm last weekend, and Roger Williams University dominated the tournament on both the men's and women's sides.

RWU men and women both came away with championships. The men beat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 19-12 for the Division 3 Plate championship. The women dominated Plymouth State University, 52-0 to capture the Division 3 Cup championship.

As usual, the tournament came with plenty of bumps, bruises and worse. The Portsmouth Fire Department reported that it transported 31 players to hospitals and provided first aid to dozens of others. Injuries included fractures, strains and sprains, lacerations and concussions.

The tournament hired 17 local firefighters for the event and rented the department’s reserve ambulance.

University of Rhode Island

The University of Rhode Island mens B team lost to Fitchburg State 5-17 in the Division 2 Plate semifinals. The URI women lost the Division 1 Cup championship to University of Connecticut, 38-0.
