A variety of annual events will herald the Christmas season this week and next in Tiverton and Little Compton. From tree lightings and concerts to visits from Santa, celebrate the season with neighbors and friends. (Santa’s fire engine visit in Westport is a couple of weekends away.)

Annual tree lighting

and visit from the Clauses Join Tiverton Recreation for a special holiday event on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fort Barton Elementary School. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at 5 p.m. by Tiverton Fire Truck in front of the school. All are invited to welcome them and watch the Town Hall tree being lit while enjoying holiday music played by the Tiverton High School Marching Band under the direction of Daniel Snizek. After the tree lighting, follow Santa to “Santa’s Workshop” for a visit with the jolly man and a complimentary photo by Captivation Photography, a reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Councilman Brett Pelletier, dance performances by Creative Dance, complimentary cookies and cocoa, caroling by the senior center Chorus, activity tables and more. Share in the holiday caring and bring a new or gently used coat or pair of mittens to help people in need during the winter season.

Memorial Tree Spree and tree lighting ceremony

The 22nd annual Ben Wilkie Memorial Tree Spree is on Sunday, Dec. 6, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Wilbur School gymnasium on the Little Compton Commons. Dozens of 4-foot, theme-decorated trees and other items will be available to win. A drawing at 7 p.m. determines the winner of each tree. Over 1,225 trees have been donated to the Tree Spree since its inception in 1994. Also available will be tote bags and long-sleeved T-shirts featuring the logo of Ben Wilkie on his tractor delivering Christmas trees. The logo was created by Wilkie family friend Corey Windham. All proceeds from the Tree Spree benefit local scholarships administered by Scholarship Little Compton. At 5 p.m., the holiday tree lighting ceremony is at Pike’s Peak on the Commons. Then, at 6 p.m., Santa will arrive, with an elf. Annual re-Tree Showcase

The third annual re-Tree Showcase of Trees will feature an opening reception on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. on The Meeting House lawn at the Tiverton Four Corners Art Center, Main Street. Featured are 5- to 9-feet tall trees created using re-cycled materials. There will be a $150 prize for best overall tree. The show runs until Jan. 4.

Sweetback SistersChristmas sing-along Tickets are on sale for the Sweetback Sisters Country Christmas Sing Along Spectacular on Friday, Dec. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Little Compton Community Center on the Commons. Emily Miller and Zara Bode will give their signature holiday performance with amazing harmonies and lively renditions of all your favorite Christmas songs. Tickets are $20 per person. Dinner is included. Wine and beer will be available. Call 635-2400 to reserve seats and purchase tickets.
