Sands, Ainworth lead locals in Westport Half Marathon

Boston runner Sean Cameron won the Sept. 13 Westport Half Marathon by over two minutes in a time of 1:16:59. Doing that required a pace of 5:53 minutes per mile over the 13.1-mile course — average speed 10.1 mph.

First woman finisher was Rachel Coogan of Allston, Mass., who finished fifth overall in a time of 1:24:17.

A total of 322 runners finished the race.

Runners followed a route from Buzzards Bay Brewing down Horseback Road, across East Beach Road and up Drift Road to Buzzards Bay Brewing.

Top local finisher was Westport’s Richard Sands who finished 17th overall in a time of 1:34:57. Corinne Ainsworth was the top Westport woman at 1:48:52.

Westport's scenic roads played home to 322 runners from throughout Massachusetts and beyond last weekend. The second annual Westport Half Marathon Sept. 13 took athletes on a 13.1-mile journey down Horseneck Road, past East Beach, onto Drift Road and back to Buzzards Bay Brewing for well-deserved refreshments, awards and hugs from proud family and friends.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
