PORTSMOUTH — He’s making a list, checking it twice — and making the rounds in Portsmouth.

Children will have plenty of opportunities to greet Santa Claus here throughout the month, so get your cameras ready.

Santa’s Tours

Santa’s Tours by tractor are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, and then at 6:30 p.m. each subsequent date for eight nights.

Santa will hand out full-size candy canes in different neighborhoods each night, starting with Common Fence Point on Dec. 1.

Wendy Silvia, one of the organizers, said residents can learn where Santa will be if they visit the group's Facebook page. The schedule will also be posted on www.onaquidneck.com.

“Every night we’ll post where it’s going to be,” she said. “If it’s raining, we won’t go out. We always tell people to pay attention to the Facebook page.

Tree-lighting at library

The Portsmouth Free Public Library, 2658 East Main Road, will host its 33rd annual Christmas tree lighting starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Cocoa and cookies will be served in the lobby and the tree-lighting will take place when Santa Claus arrives on a fire truck at 6 p.m.

Santa will talk to each child and candy canes will be given to each one. Bring a camera!

Flying Santa

Santa will visit Prudence Island by helicopter at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, as part of the Friends of Flying Santa’s ongoing holiday tours.

The tradition dates back to Christmas of 1929, when gifts were dropped from a plane to lighthouse keepers and their families along the New England coast.

For more information, visit www.flyingsanta.org.

Glen Manor Open House

Featuring extraordinary decorations and Yuletide cheer, the Glen Manor House will be open to the public for its annual Christmas Open House from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11.

Santa will arrive at 2:45 p.m. for pictures and there will be plenty of local entertainment and talent.

Photos with Santa

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, East Bay Newspapers will be hosting its 18th annual “Photos with Santa” event at the Audubon Environmental Educational Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol.

This is a free event and families from the surrounding area are invited to have their children's photo taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. After the event, the photos will be posted during Christmas week in the East Bay Newspapers.

Reserve your photo time in advance at www.eastbayri.com/events and receive a $5 credit to be used in the purchase of photos from the event. (Remaining registration proceeds will benefit the Audubon Society of Rhode Island.)

In addition to the photos, the Audubon will create an activity center and the Bristol Police Department will conduct a child/infant car seat safety clinic throughout the day. There will also be Christmas trees for sale, a toy drive to benefit Child & Family Services and the Audubon's gift shop will be offering double discounts for members.

This year’s event is sponsored by Gil’s Appliances. All are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to support the Gil’s Appliances Holiday Toy Drive, which benefits Child & Family’s Adopt-a-Family Program. Donations may also be dropped off at Gil’s in Bristol through Dec. 14.
