EAST PROVIDENCE — An unsuspecting motorist was thoroughly startled early Saturday morning, May 30, after an unknown assailant fired at least one gun shot into the back of his vehicle.
According to the report of East Providence Police Detective Captain Richard Frazier, the victim, a 29-year-old Pawtucket resident, was driving north on Pawtucket Avenue around 1 a.m. Saturday when he came up to a red light at the intersection with New Road.
It was there that a vehicle approached from behind and the shot was fired, smashing the rear window of the victim's pick-up truck. The assailant then fled the area towards Roger Williams Avenue with its lights off. The make and model of the assailant's vehicle is unknown.
The victim was uninjured, but "shaken up pretty badly," Capt. Frazier said. "I don't know how he didn't get hit. He's lucky to be alive."
At least one bullet was found inside the vehicle. Police have it in their possession. Capt. Frazier said the caliber is still to be determined. EPPD detectives were headed back to the scene Saturday to scour the scene for potential clues.
Capt. Frazier the incident appears to be random. There is no evidence at the moment which connects the victim to any type of nefarious activity.
"We're still in the very early stages of the investigation. We'll look at all possibilities," Capt. Frazier added. "But at this point it looks like the poor guy was just at the wrong place at the wrong time."
Capt. Frazier said about an hour earlier Pawtucket Police received a call of shots fired in the area of Prospect Street just over the border of the two cities and only about 500 yards from where the East Providence took place.
Capt. Frazier said at this point in the investigation it is not known if the two incidents are related, but he did not discount the possibility.
