EAST PROVIDENCE — The members of the Silver Spring Golf Course in city teed up a special event to wind down the 2015 season by hosting for the first time what they hope will become an annual happening, a couples tournament on a fittingly picturesque Sunday morning, Sept. 27.
Fourteen pairs of husbands and wive, boyfriends and girlfriends hit the six-hole layout. Prizes in the form of gift cards from Davenport's Restaurant, Gregg's Restaurant and Dunkin Donuts were awarded. Guests enjoyed a cookout with hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks as well. Each player received a sleeve of balls and tees. Money remaining from the event will be put back into the course.
"This is really an appreciation for all those couples who come out and play most weekends," said Charlie Cross, Silver Spring's Tournament Committee chairman. "It's just a way for us to say thank you to all the couples who support the course."
Mr. Cross, who moved to East Providence from Burrillville three years ago, said he gained an instant affinity for the unique gem located on Pawtucket Avenue. He's been a member of the course the last two seasons and became Tournament Committee chairman this summer.
"I just love this place to death," Mr. Cross continued. "I just wanted to give back to the course and I figured this was a good way to do it."
A fine golfer in his own right, Mr. Cross won the Silver Spring club championship this season over Chung Nguyen, who himself recently took home low gross honors in the Rec Department's revered Dolly Searle Tournament played at Wannamoisett Country Club.
"This just seemed like a really good idea," Mr. Cross added of the couples event. "It's a nice tournament for husbands and wives to come out and have a good time. And it was a perfect day for it. Hopefully it will become an annual event for the members to enjoy."
