Local legislators to discuss county-wide issues

NEWPORT — The Aquidneck Island Planning Commission is hosting the third annual Newport County Legislative Forum from 8:30-10 a.m. on Thursday, April 5, in the auditorium of the Community College of Rhode Island’s Newport campus, 1 John H. Chafee Boulevard.

“We are delighted to host this event for the third year in a row,” said Dick Adams, AIPC’s chairman. “It is one of many ways that AIPC facilitates communication between state and local leaders and members of the public, and we are especially pleased that our new executive director, Mr. John Shea, will be joining us for this important conversation.”

More than half of Newport County’s 11-member delegation will participate in the discussion, including Rep. Kenneth Mendonca, Sen. James Seveney, Rep. Susan Donovan, Sen. Louis DiPalma, Sen. Dawn Euer, Sen. Walter Felag, Rep. Lauren Carson and Rep. Deborah Ruggiero.

Each will have an opportunity to speak about their constituent’s top concerns and will take questions from the audience during an extended question-and-answer segment moderated by Neil Steinberg, president and chief operating officer of the Rhode Island Foundation.

According to AIPC, 2018 is shaping up to be an active legislative session, with Rhode Islanders facing uncertainty around future federal funding for the state and municipalities. The forum is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss how new initiatives may affect everyone living in Newport County.

This year’s forum is part of AIPC’s ongoing “Smart Island” series of public events. It is free and open to the public, but space is limited and an RSVP is recommended to guarantee a seat. Early arrival to the event is also encouraged Coffee will be available beginning at 8 a.m., and the program will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m.

Free parking is available on the CCRI campus and transit service is available on RIPTA’s Routes 63 & 64 (see www.RIPTA.com for schedules).

The event is being held in partnership with the Newport Daily News and CCRI. For more information and to register for the event, visit www.aquidneckplanning.org.
