Spiced nuts are a sweet/savory holiday treat

Spiced nuts are popular, easy to make and can be made ahead — the perfect entertaining snack for the busy holiday season.

Savory versions are good with wine and cocktails. You can add some chopped, fresh herbs during the last 10 minutes of roasting.

Sweeter versions make a nice addition to an array of holiday desserts and can be served with punch, cider or eggnog.

Sweet Spiced Nuts

Makes 2 1/2 cups

1 egg white

2 tablespoons cold water

2 1/2 cups nuts (your choice)

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup cornstarch

2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp. ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Pinch of salt

In a small bowl, whisk egg white lightly with water until a little foamy. Add nuts and toss well.

Preheat oven to 350°F.

In a medium bowl, combine remaining ingredients. With a fork, lift nuts out of the egg white mixture, leaving the extra in the bowl, and transfer them to the spice mixture, tossing to coat well.

Arrange the nuts in a single layer on a jelly roll pan lined with baking parchment or aluminum foil. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden. Cool before serving.

Note: You can adjust the spices in any proportions you want.
