One local high school basketball team saw its season come to an end in the playoffs while another prepares for its next postseason encounter.

Saturday, March 5, the St. Andrew's School Varsity I boys' cagers ran up against one of the region's best in Vermont Academy, the fourth-seeded Saints falling to the top-seeded Wildcats 85-61 in the semifinals of the NEPSAC Class AA championship tournament.

Vermont, which features University of Miami signee Bruce Brown, dominated St. Andrew's pretty much from tip to finish, according to Saints' head coach Mike Hart.

"I am extremely proud of our kids today. We ended the season 21-10 and made it to the NEPSAC Class AA Final Four. Our team carries a 3.53 GPA and the kids act like gentlemen both on and off the court," Coach Hart added. "I am lucky to have been able to coach such a terrific group of kids this season. They will win many more important battles in the game of life due to their work ethic and solid character."

Sam Friday led the Saints with 16 points while and Keyshaad Dixon added 15 and 7 assists. East Providence residents and St. Andrew's center Terrell Brown had eight points. Vermont held Saints' junior standout Aaron Wheeler to just three. Brown scored a game-best 22 to lead the Wildcats. Vermont plays Cushing Academy for the AA title Sunday afternoon, March 6, at Rhode Island College at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, the East Providence High School boys' basketball team readies for a clash against rival LaSalle in the quarterfinals Rhode Island Interscholastic League Open State Tournament Sunday night at Brown University's Pizzitola Center.

The Townies defeated St. Raphael, 54-50, in the opening round of the event while the Rams, the top seeds and the reigning champs, defeated East Greenwich.

The Townies and Rams played once this year to begin their respective Division I regular season schedules back on December 18. Visiting LaSalle defeated E.P. 70-62. Tip time Sunday night at Brown is 6 p.m.

“It is the No. 1 team in the state, they are defending champs and we get an opportunity to go and knock them off,” EPHS head coach Alex Butler said of LaSalle. “We are going to give it the best shot we can.”
