St. Philomena School students pitch water filtration invention

FIRST LEGO League state championship is Saturday at RWU

PORTSMOUTH/BRISTOL — Just a few days before being slated to compete in Saturday’s FIRST LEGO League state championships at Roger Williams University, one team warmed up by pitching their water filtration invention to two local water districts.

On Monday, the FIRST LEGO League team from St. Philomena School in Portsmouth, Team Reign, met with Jessica Lynch, general manager and chief engineer of the Portsmouth Water and Fire District, as well as engineers from the Bristol County Water Authority.

In keeping with FIRST LEGO’s theme this year of “Hydro Dynamics,” team members discussed the water filtration system it developed over the season, which culminates Saturday.

The device's purpose is to cheaply and effectively clean rain water and pond water in areas where fresh water supply is limited. This device can be used by, but is not limited to, areas affected by natural disasters.

The experts from Bristol County and Portsmouth listened to the student's ideas and gave feedback to improve the water filtration system's efficiency and effectiveness in creating fresh drinkable water.

Team Reign advanced through the qualifying tournament held at Portsmouth Middle School on Dec. 16, and will compete in the FIRST LEGO League state championship on Saturday, Jan. 13, in the Recreation Center at Roger Williams University, Bristol.

There, they will demonstrate their core values, present their invention and project research and discuss their robot design and programming with a panel of judges from the community.

They'll also participate in the FIRST LEGO League robot game, which is open to the public in the RWU field house from 12:15-4:15 p.m.

The team that wins the state championship receives an invitation to compete alongside teams from 80 countries at the FIRST World Festival in Detroit Michigan in April, and each member receives a $20,000 scholarship ($5,000, renewable for four years) from Roger Williams University.

Students on the St. Philomena School's FIRST LEGO League Team Reign include George St. Peter, Henry Claytor, Jimmy Fasy, Stephen Quinn, Eleanor Jarvis and Emily DeFreitas.
