Thousands left without power, schools closed

A towering oak tree slammed into a home on Chantilly Drive. Another tree uprooted one street over, on Teakwood, and crashed into the corner of a home. On Old Chimney Road, three fallen trees blocked roads and driveways and ripped down power lines.

Late Sunday night and early Monday morning, a hard-hitting storm, packing hurricane-force wind gusts rolled across Barrington and the rest of the region. The storm knocked out power to more than 100,000 households across the state, including about 4,500 Barrington homes.

The storm also left the majority of Barrington schools without power on Monday morning. Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore emailed parents at about 6:30 a.m., notifying them of the canceled classes. He said it was not clear when crews would restore power to the schools.

Workers — some from the Barrington Department of Public Works, and others from private tree companies — were busy clearing downed limbs and trees off of power lines all across Barrington Monday morning.

On Nayatt Road, Jill Heterick was awoken by the sound of a huge tree limb crashing down in her front yard. Mrs. Heterick said the limb crushed her car and ripped the power lines from her home.

"My daughter and I were so surprised by the sound of the crash. We went out and I tried to cover the car with a tarp to prevent water from ruining the interior. This morning we had the tree removed and it looks like every inch of the car is damaged," Mrs. Heterick said.

In Country Club plat, two cars were also damaged by fallen trees, both on Riverside Drive.

Ray Bilodeau, of 51 Riverside Drive, said he was in bed at 8:15 Monday morning when he and his wife heard a loud crack and looked out the window to see a large tree limb on his Lexus SUV.

"I think the smaller limbs fell on the car first and prevented a lot of damage from the larger limb. We are lucky - looks like only the side mirror is damaged," Mr. Bilodeau said.

Another car parked at 55 Riverside Drive was not as fortunate, as it suffered significant damage from a downed tree.
