For the 22nd consecutive year, “story painter” Don Cadoret will open the door of his home studio in Tiverton for visitors on the weekend of Dec. 5-6 from 11 to 5 both days. The studio is located at 23 Reed Street. Homemade cookies, treats and beverages will be served at the free open house.
The decorated home is filled with antique Christmas treasures that they have collected on trips all over the region. There's a Christmas tree loaded with ornaments dating back to the Civil War. Elsewhere are countless bottle brush trees, figurines and antique Santas next to tiny wooden villages.
"Many of the things in our collections have inspired paintings in the past," Mr. Cadoret says. "I believe they continue to share a spirit that's evident in my work. It's fun to make the connections in the studio and in our life." The works evoke a New England landscape as portrayed in each season. Animals are also important to paintings, acting as the metaphor for a human story that can be both sophisticated and childlike, Cadoret explains. "The paintings may look simple on the surface, but there is always a deeper meaning and lesson shared."
Of special note this year are the miniature Christmas trees that Mr. Cadoret has been painting for the last two months. He has his sights on completing 150 of the wooden trees before the open house.
"I love the challenge of painting small things. It speaks to my detailed personality and my passion to paint nearly every day of the year. I can't imagine a better life."
Mr. Cadoret has been painting for over 40 years and his work has been exhibited all over the country, including the White House, Boston State House, the Cahoon Museum of American Art, Newport Art Museum, LeMuse D’Art Naif in Montreal, Hancock Shaker Museum, and the Frank Miele Gallery in New York City. He is a founding board member of South Coast Artists.
