Annual fishing tournament will raise money for Make A Wish Foundation

The 25th annual Striper Marina Striped Bass Tournament will be held next week, from Thursday, May 31 through Sunday, June 3.

Striper Marina has raised nearly $150,000 over the past 24 years with the tournament. The funds had been donated to children's homeless shelters in Rhode Island, but this year the tournament will benefit the Make A Wish Foundation.

Striper Marina President Al Elson said people who register for the tournament can fish from a boat, from the shoreline or off the bridges. The heaviest catch wins. (Rhode Island fishing regulations state that striped bass must be 34 inches in length be a legal catch.)

In years past, the tournament would draw more than 200 anglers. Last year there were about 125 competitors.

"It's gone up and down over the years," Mr. Elson said.

The marina president said the idea for the local striper tournament came from an event that had been held by the Bristol County Striper Club.

"They used to do a thing called 'Take a Kid Fishing,'" said Mr. Elson. "They used to get a group of kids from one of the shelters and get some boats and take them out fishing for a day."

The opportunity to share the sport of fishing with less fortunate kids grew into the fund-raising tournament, and has continued for a quarter of a century.

Anyone interested in participating in the tournament or helping to sponsor the event can write to al@stripermarina.com or visit www.stripermarina.com or call 401-245-6121.

The tournament entry fee is $10.
