Struggling local economy could use Belvedere boost

Posted

I have followed with keen interest the stories and letters regarding the proposed new development at the corner of State and Thames streets in Bristol. In particular, the letters have expressed strong sentiment pro and con about the project, all professing to believe what is in Bristol’s best interest. I admire the passion of all.

Jim Roiter, the gentleman who is bringing this proposed building of mixed use to our Zoning and Historic District boards, has I believe, a most distinguished track record of accomplishment. This is the man who made a huge investment in our downtown and revived the dilapidated Belvedere Hotel, making it into the most aesthetically pleasing building possible. He took on a tremendous risk, and Bristol is benefitting by its function with new residents and its beauty, by adding to the wealth of our main street. He is to be congratulated for this past work.

The new proposed building by Mr. Roiter is not only tastefully designed, and already scaled back in responding to residents’ concerns, but it will add tremendously to our downtown area in the most positive ways. The mixed use of the new building will bring new residents, and an additional attraction of a new restaurant to our area, and join the list of great eateries that now exist.

The dining experience remains one of the most primary attractions for our visitors to Bristol, while also catering to Bristol citizens. It will assist us in driving the local economy, which is still struggling with scattered commercial vacant space awaiting tenants.

This development will enhance what is now an open lot. It will eliminate the view of the two-tier parking deck which has little appeal in its beauty. This project will also complement the development now under way on the two Azevedo buildings on Thames Street, which will also host a restaurant.  When it comes to dining, the more the merrier, as it creates more reasons for Bristol to thrive. This is a unique feature of the hospitality industry.

It is also my hope that with the success of another Roiter project on Thames, along with the revived Azevedo buildings, that it will inspire the still-stuck Robin Rug development project which remains an unknown. Despite approvals for a great plan of development for residential units and a much-needed hotel, Robin Rug remains a mystery. This will wait for another day.

Please join me in supporting Jim Roiter and wishing him success in his project.
Bristol will benefit tremendously by this very tasteful addition. Let us not be afraid of change, because it is inevitable, and this change is for the betterment of Bristol.
