Sunshine greets runners at Nayatt 5K

Crowd turns out for school's fund-raising event

Posted

It has snowed, it has rained, and it has been pretty darn cold for previous Nayatt 5K events, but warm sunshine brightened the course at this year's race.

There was some rain late Friday night and very early Saturday morning, but by the time people began gathering at Nayatt School for the special event the clouds had parted and sun filled the sky.

Hundreds of people participated in both the 5K run and the 1-mile fun run during this year's event. There were also crowds of kids who ran in the 50-yard races.

Bronson Venable won the 5K race with a time of 15:33, while Paul Cajavat finished second at 15:48 and Mars Bishop was third at 16:16.

More than 250 people ran or walked in the 5K, which raises money for the Nayatt School PTO.

There was also a very large crowd of participants in the 1-mile race — 333 people either ran or walked the 1-mile course.

Ethan Knight finished with the fastest time; the 13-year-old clocked a 6:32. Preston Brown was second with a time of 6:33 and Christian Leigh was third at 6:39. Otis Crosby finished fourth and Luke Short was fifth.
