Suspicious blaze destroys garage at new Westport house
An early Wednesday morning fire described as suspicious leveled the garage of a vacant Westport house under construction.
Reported at around 2 a.m. on Forge Road near the Dartmouth town line, the fire destroyed the attached garage and damaged that side of the house before firefighters could put it out.
Investigators say they have several reasons to suspect that the fire may have been set.
First, there is no electricity yet to the house and it is unoccupied.
And Deputy Fire Chief Allen Manley noted that this is the second suspicious fire in the area in a matter of weeks — the other was at Briar’s Antiques on Main Road in Tiverton is also believed to have been arson.
The deputy said this latest blaze is being investigated by the joint task force that includes Westport, Tiverton and Fall River, as well as the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
