Thanksgiving eve chimney fire damages Westport house

A Wednesday night chimney fire caused considerable damage to a Westport house right before Thanksgiving.

At about 9:02 p.m. Wednesday, Westport firefighters responded to 11 Emerson St. (south of Route 6) where they discovered a chimney fire with moderate smoke on the first floor of the two-story, wood-frame house, according to a statement by Capt. Michael P. Silvia, public information officer for the fire department.

Firefighters attacked the fire from both the roof and inside on the first floor. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes but caused roughly $100,000 in damage to the structure and contents, Capt. Silvia said.

All three occupants got out safely but one firefighter suffered a minor injury when he tripped and fell. The firefighter was treated and stayed at the fire scene. The owner of the building is listed as Jonas Ruzas of Westport.

Responding to the fire from Westport were three engines, one ladder and Westport’s EMA rehab unit. A rescue from Dartmouth stood by and the Red Cross responded  to assist the victims.
