Phillip, Evora, girls' 4x4 relay perform best for Townies in Large, Class A championships

Third-place results were the best earned by athletes from the East Providence High School girls' and boys' indoor track and field teams in their respective Large Class and Class A Championship Meets conducted Saturday morning, Feb. 3, at the Providence Career and Tech Academy Fieldhouse, the home of the sport each winter.

Nazarae Phillip and Cameron Evora each finished in the "show" position in their premier events, the girls' 55 meter dash for the former and the boys' high jump for the latter. The EPHS girls' 4x400 meter relay team of Kendra and Kandace Daniel, Samantha Clarke and Abigail Raphael also ran third in that event.

In the team title chases, Classical won the girls' Large championship with 116.5 points. LaSalle was second with 76.5 and Barrington third with 72. East Providence earned 23 points to place ninth of 12 sides. Hendricken was the boys' Class w winner with 183 points. LaSalle was second with 133 and Cumberland a distant third with 39.5. EPHS was 10th of 12 squads with 12.5 points.

In the girls' dash, Phillip was second to Cranston West's Ailani Sutherland (7.4-7.53) in the preliminary heats, but slipped to third (7.45) behind the winning Falcon senior (7.31) and LaSalle's Alexis Caggiano (7.44) in the final. Caggiano was third in the heats at 7.58.

The Townies' 4x4 quartet of Clarke, the Daniel sisters and Raphael clocked a time of 4:24.01 to place third in the event behind the winners from Classical (4:08.17) and runner-up LaSalle (4:16.91).

EP's other points came from among others, Trinity Johnson-Carter's sixth-place finish in the 55 meter hurdles (9.81). Cranston West's Reece Vitale won the race in 9.01. The Daniels, Clarke and Phillip were fourth (1:50;17) in the 4x2 replay won in 1:46.6 by Classical. And in the 4x8 relay won by LaSalle in 10:19.15, East Providence's Melany Sotomayor, Adriana Perry, Kathryn Patalano and Alicia Pinto were sixth in 11:23.82.

As for Evora, the EPHS senior was third alone on attempts clearing a 5 feet, 10 inches. Hendricken's Jakob Reyes won the boys' high jump at 6' also on fewer attempts than LaSalle's Antonio Bearden. Two others cleared 5'10. The Townies' Dylan Slavick shared eighth place and earned a half point for the locals on attempts at 5'8."

Some of EP's other points came in the 4x4 relay won by LaSalle (3:37.18) as Brian Rutkowski, Julius Cortes, Immanuel Prevete and Jaidin Ivy were fifth in 3:48.19. The others came Jack Pawlik, Jietan Ruiz, Ivy and Cortes ran seventh in the 4x2 relay (1:40.58) also won by LaSalle in 1:32.3.

Up next
It's a busy week of championship events for the Townies and the rest including girls' freshmen states Monday, Feb. 5; boys' freshman states Tuesday, Feb. 6; and Thursday, Feb. 8, girls' jv states. Each meet at the PCTA Fieldhouse starts at 6 p.m.

Both EPHS varsity sides next compete in the "Last Chance" state qualifying meet Saturday morning, Feb. 10, at the PCTA Fieldhouse.
