Three Barrington boys earn Eagle Scout rank

Scouts build raise garden beds, clear out invasive plants, help Purple Martins

On Friday, July 13, Barrington Scout Troop IV, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Bill Scheibl, held its Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Jack Perugini, Benjamin Conway and Zachary Obel-Omia at Yawgoog Scout Reservation in Rockville.

In attendance for this event were fellow scouts, family and friends for the 134th, 135th and 136th Eagle Scout of Troop IV.

As a part of earning this rank, Benjamin Conway built raised beds that were planted for the 125th anniversary of Saints Matthew and Mark Episcopal Church. There was a section of the perimeter of the property that was not taken care of, so he cleaned it up to restore the exterior of the church.

Finally, he planted the garden for the ministry of the church. His volunteer team consisted of inter-generational members of the church, Boy Scouts and the community. The garden was a gift and a lasting commemorative of the church's 125th anniversary.

Zachary Obel-Omia cleared the undergrowth and invasive plants from area surrounding a century-old oak tree on St. Andrew's Farm field, which is owned by the Barrington Land Trust. A lot of undergrowth and invasive plants make it difficult to use this space and may threaten the tree's continued growth. The area cleared can be used as a meeting and educational area when the project was completed. The area cleared was approximately 706 square feet — the area underneath all of the branches of the large tree.

Finally, Jack Perugini's project involved a plot of land owned by the Barrington Land Trust and involved the removal of small trees and bushes on the edge of a field. This was done to push back the forest and allow a species of bird, the Purple Martin, to have more field to inhabit without the threat of predatory animals that live in the forest.
