TIVERTON — The Division III Tiverton girl’s varsity soccer team bounced back from a difficult loss against Narragansett to defeat the Providence Country Day Knights 5-1 this past Friday.

From the start, the Tigers dominated possession over their opponent, taking the lead early on when captain Kayana Urrego, assisted by Victoria McGovern, put the ball deep into the net’s corner just six minutes into the game.

Sophomore Mariah Ramos, with a flurry of opportunities of her own, found ways to best PCD’s goalie on three separate occasions, including a penalty kick placed into the lower righthand corner late in the second half. McGovern, assisted by sophomore Mikayla Esteves, scored the final goal of the night with just two minutes left on the clock.

A strong defensive performance by junior Kayley Nagle helped keep the Knight’s away from freshmen goalie Emma Lopes, who ended the game with five saves.

“We had great movement, didn’t give up, and in the end that leads to victory,” said captain Jillian Swass.

Swass expertly set the pace in the Tigers’ midfield throughout the evening, consistently beating PCD to the ball and creating chances for her teammates to connect and capitalize at the Knights’ end of the field.

“They come together well as a team, and a huge part of that is Kayana and Jill as captains,” said head coach Jim Gauch. “They’re one of our biggest assets."

With several injuries and illnesses plaguing his players throughout the week, Mr. Gauch opted to change up the formation for Friday’s night game — despite having never worked on it in practice. Though he said it did take some time for the girls to adjust, Mr. Gauch thought that, overall, the team handled the changes well. His team captains agreed.

“We played our hearts out,” said Urrego.

Tiverton’s next home game will be against Shea High School on Thursday, September 27, at 7 p.m.
