WRENTHAM — An unidentified 18-year-old Tiverton man sustained a head injury after crashing into a construction sign on southbound Route 495 near Wrentham Tuesday about 7:45 p.m.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the man was driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla in the left lane when the car "left the roadway, entered the median, and struck a highway warning sign" that cautioned drivers about an upcoming lane closure.

The impact brought the sign down through the car’s windshield, striking the driver in the head. Wrentham Fire and EMS transported the injured man to Rhode Island Hospital with a head laceration.

Police said that investigation of the incident indicated the driver was not paying attention to the traffic slowing in front of him entering the construction zone.

"When the driver finally realized that traffic was stopped in front of him because of the lane merge, police said, he tried to stop in time, but in doing so, lost control, veered off the road to the left, and struck the sign," state police said.
