PORTSMOUTH — A Tiverton woman was charged with driving under the influence after her car crashed into a guardrail on West Main Road Wednesday afternoon, March 13, police said.

According to Detective Lt. Michael Arnold, officers responded to the area of West Main Road near Raytheon Co. around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday for a report of an erratic driver. While searching the area, they located the vehicle in the area of Route 24 North and Freeborn Street.

“The car had left the lane of travel and collided with the guardrail,” Lt. Arnold said in a prepared statement.

The driver, Leslie S. Lord, 41, of 2 Audet St., Tiverton, failed standardized field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test on the scene, he said.

She was charged with suspicion of driving while intoxicated and also cited for refusing a chemical breath test.

As a precaution, the operator was taken to a local hospital and later released, Lt. Arnold said. She was arraigned before a justice of the peace Wednesday night at the Portsmouth Police headquarters and released.
