Townies split Eastern Division outdoor track meets

East Providence loses to Portsmouth, beats Bay View and St. Pat's

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School outdoor track and field squads hosted their third meet of the 2023 Eastern Division regular season Monday afternoon, April 24, at Townie Stadium, the locals each losing to Portsmouth while both beat St. Patrick's while the girls' also defeated in-city neighbor Bay View.

The boys fell to the Patriots 92.5-59-5, but defeated St. Pat's 134-0. The girls lost to Portsmouth 96-59, but beat St. Pat's 116-0 and the Bengals 81-52. Bay View also topped St. Patrick's 89-0. The record for the EPHS boys moved to 6-2, the girls 7-2.

The Townies swept the relays in both meets.

The team of Max Whiting, Yusef Abdullah, Martim Moniz and Kit Ruddock clocked a time of 45.1 seconds in the boys' 4x100 meter while the quartet of Whiting, Jaidin Ivy, Justin Jardine, Lucas Santa Cruz won the 4x4 in 3:42.6.

Likewise, the girls' foursome of Nazarae Phillip, Kandace Daniel, Kendra Daniel and Giselle Raphael won the 4x1 in 50.8 with Samantha Clarke, Kiera Mullen, Raphael and Gladys Barrera winning the 4x4 in 4:33.2.

Individually, Phillip and Kandace Daniel went one-two in the girls' 100 and 200 meter races, running respective times of 12.8/13.2 and 26.7/27.2 in each.

Mullen added the other solo win for EPHS with a time of 54.2 in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Also of note, Bay View's Amy Papa won the 100 hurdles in 17.1 and teammate Francine Miller won the 400 in with 1:03.6 with East Providence's Clarke second in 1:04.7.

Ruddock also won the boys' 100 dash in 11.7 and Moniz the 400 in 54.3. In the field, Kenaz Ochogwu won the high jump, Machar Francis the shot and Dylan Mays the discus.
