Troubled Barrington student brought box cutter to school

Barrington police are thanking a resident who may have helped officials thwart a dangerous situation at the high school last week.

According to police, the resident contacted police on Thursday, Sept. 17, after learning from his child that a male student at Barrington High School was considering harming himself or others or creating a chaotic scenario at the school. The 16-year-old student had reportedly been telling other students about his plans.

The school resource officer — a new position at the schools this year — spoke with the student, who was found to have a box cutter in his possession at the school.

Police seized the box cutter and called in rescue officials who transported the boy to the hospital for evaluation.
