Two revelers at ‘Aquapalooza’ off Prudence Island arrested

PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth Police reports from over the past week.

Tuesday, Aug. 2

Brenna M. Leveille, 30, of 28 Edwards Drive, was charged at 9:30 p.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police said they stopped her car on East Main Road at Hedly Street after observing it swerving within its lane and striking a curb.

Wednesday, Aug. 3

Michael M. Doyle, 66, of 166 Thayer Drive, was charged at 3:38 p.m. with domestic assault after police said he chased a woman in his home and raised his fist to her.

Police said the St. John’s Masonic Hall, at 81 Sprague St., was vandalized sometime overnight. Lodge Master William Hedgcorth told police he arrived at the hall around 2 p.m. and noticed that the rear fire escape had been deployed to the ground. The rear motion sensor flood lights were broken and one light bulb was smashed near the rear door, he told police. However, it did not appear that anyone gained access to the interior of the building, according to police.

Thursday, Aug. 4

Tomas J. Loman, 25, of  Berroth Court, was charged at 10:12 p.m. with reckless driving (eluding police) after police said he operated his motorcycle an estimated 80 mph in a posted 25 mph zone on East Main Road at Patriots Way. Police said Mr. Loman eluded them before coming to a stop after nearly crashing on Dexter Street near the Route 24 overpass.

Saturday, Aug. 6

Harbormaster Stephen Burns and another officer rescued a 57-year-old Portsmouth man who was sent into the Sakonnet River around 9 a.m. after his kayak overturned about a mile off McCorrie Beach. Officers responded around 10 a.m. after receiving reports of a swimmer in distress who was waving his arms. Police found the man wearing a flotation device and holding onto the overturned kayak, which was full of water and partially submerged.

Timothy J. Ring, 30, of 111 Queen St., East Greenwich, was charged at 2:33 p.m. with disorderly conduct and obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duties. The arrest came after Portsmouth Harbormaster Stephen Burns and another officer, on patrol at Potter Cove at Prudence Island, came upon a group of six boats rafted together during the floating party known as Aquapalooza. There they saw Mr. Ring involved in a loud confrontation with other boaters, police said, adding that at one point he made a fist and swung at another man, missing. Earlier, police said, Mr. Ring and a friend had paddled their boat over to the group after running out of gas, and were allowed to tie up and wait for help. Shortly afterward, Mr. Ring started arguing with all the people in the area, police said. Mr. Ring initially gave a false name when questioned, according to police. Police towed the disabled boat with its passengers on board, but Mr. Ring continued to act disorderly and threatened to jump off the boat, according to police, who then handcuffed him. The Coast Guard was then asked to tow the boat to Bristol, and Mr. Ring was taken into custody by Portsmouth police, who found two active warrants for Mr. Ring’s arrest, out of 3rd and 4th district courts. Mr. Ring was later taken to Newport Hospital to be treated for cuts to his face, which he sustained when he jumped into the water off Prudence earlier, police said.

Jakob E. Franklin, 19, of 57 Sayles Ave., Warwick, was charged at 4:17 p.m. with operating a boat while intoxicated, after U.S. Coast Guard brought him to Carnegie Abbey. Police were told that Mr. Franklin’s vessel had been seen bumping into several other vessels at Potter Cove at Prudence Island and he had admitted to drinking “five beers and two shots.”

Christopher A. Lastinger, 33, of 855 Dryden St., Virginia Beach, Va., was charged around 7 p.m. with domestic disorderly conduct. Police responded to the area of Route 24 northbound and Sprague Street for a report that a man was walking barefoot in the breakdown lane. Police said Mr. Lastinger was a passenger in a truck being driven by his girlfriend when they had a verbal argument. He ordered that she stop the vehicle, got out of the truck and punched the hood several times in anger, leaving minor cuts on his hands and dents to the hood, police said.

Sunday, Aug. 7

Daniel T. Thelma, 57, of 8 Bedlow Place, Newport, was charged at 6:31 p.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police stopped Mr. Thelma’s Dodge Ram after getting a request to check the condition of a driver who was leaving the Weaver Cove boat ramp.
