Two teenage girls arrested following Portsmouth house party

PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth police reports from over the past week.

Friday, Jan. 29

Eric J. Moreira, 37, of 1278 West Main Road, was arrested shortly after 2 p.m. for domestic assault. The charge stems from an incident first reported on Dec. 2, when a middle school student told police that Mr. Moreira had been abusive toward a Portsmouth woman. Police issued a warrant for Mr. Moreira’s arrest and he was picked up by Newport Police on Jan. 29 for public intoxication, police said. Portsmouth Police took custody of Mr. Moreira later that afternoon.

Courtney M. Nelson, 24, of 94 Westmoreland St., Narragansett, was charged shortly after 8 p.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and operating with a foreign license that had been suspended or revoked. Police stopped her vehicle for speeding and leaving the lane of travel on Route 24 southbound near Freeborn Street.

Sunday, Jan. 31

Two girls, ages 15 and 14, were charged with underage possession of alcohol after police investigated a party on Bramans Lane shortly after 1 a.m. Police said they found the house to be in complete disarray, with a large amount of trash and empty bottles of beer and alcohol strewn throughout the residence and a bathroom sink full of vomit. The two girls were found in a bedroom — one lying on a bed and the other on the floor — and both appeared severely disoriented and sleepy, police said. One of the girls lived at the home and said she was throwing a party while her father was out of town. She also said her mother, who lives in town but is divorced from her father, had stopped by earlier to warn her that the police were coming before returning home. The mother later returned to the Bramans Lane home on the request of police, and remained silent when asked why she had left her daughter in such a highly intoxicated state, according to police.

Charles B. Davis, 46, of 160 Broad St., Providence, was arrested at 1:20 a.m. on a Providence police warrant for failing to register as a sex offender. Police made the arrest after investigating a report by a RIPTA driver who observed someone lying on the sidewalk near the Multi-Purpose Senior Center on Bristol Ferry Road. Police arrived to find Mr. Davis walking slowly on Bristol Ferry Road. He appeared to be highly intoxicated and lost his balance, falling on his head, police said. He was transported by firefighters to Newport Hospital and was later taken into custody by Providence Police.

Elizabeth M. Rudd, 20, of 18 Homer St., Newport, was charged with writing a fraudulent check in connection with an incident first reported on Dec. 8. On that date, an employee at Mt. Hope Animal Hospital told police that a check in the amount of $385 that had been written by Ms. Rudd bounced, and a certified letter sent to her came back as undeliverable. Police issued a warrant for Ms. Rudd's arrest and the Newport Police Department picked her up on Jan. 31, after which Portsmouth took custody.

A woman complained to police that her vehicle had been damaged by a golf ball from Montaup Country Club while she was driving northbound on Route 24 that day. The ball struck her front windshield, leaving a large crack. The woman said she notified Montaup, but no one took ownership of the ball.

Monday, Feb. 1

Benjamin J. Oliveira, 38, of 311 Old Mill Lane, was arrested at 9:23 p.m. on charges of domestic assault and domestic disorderly conduct. According to police, Mr. Oliveira threatened a woman while they were riding a RIPTA bus, and ripped headphones off her head. He then exited the bus at its next stop and began running southbound on West Main Road, police said. Mr. Oliveira was later found on West Main Road and taken into custody.

Police investigated a vandalism complaint by the town’s Department of Public Works. Police said the door to a small, empty town-owned building at the corner of Bristol Ferry Road and Bayview Avenue had been kicked in, breaking the door frame.
