WESTPORT — A gritty comeback effort was not enough to undo a slow start and some cold free throw shooting as the Westport boys basketball team fell 54-46 Friday evening on the Wildcats’ home court.
The game did not get off to a promising start for Westport which was in dire need of a win to keep its shaky playoff hopes alive.
Bishop Connolly raced out to a 15-2 first quarter lead and built that lead to as much as 18 points before Westport found its composure and steadily cut away at the deficit.
Much of that work happened in the third quarter when Westport put together an 18-4 run and pulled to within two at 46-44, a run launched by Nick Collins who managed to work free from the defense that had held him mostly in check for a quick six points.
But that was where the comeback ran out of gas as Bishop Connolly regrouped down the stretch, helped by Westport’s troubles at the foul line.
Conor Lecomte led Westport scores with 16 points including three 3-pointers. Aidan Viveiros hit for 12, Collins scored 8, Griffin Lecomte added 7, and Roberto Ferreira scored 3.
The loss left Westport at 7-9 (4-4 in its league) and clinging to playoff hopes by the skin of its teeth.
The team needs to win three out of its last four games — against Avon on Monday, Diman, Sacred Heart and Southeastern.
Westport squeaked by Diman earlier in the season and beat Sacred Heart handily, but was trounced by Avon and Southeastern.
Girls beat Connolly
That same evening, the Westport girls team beat Bishop Connolly 48-28 in an away game.
he win boosted the girls to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in their division.
