Veronica M. Almeida, 76, of Bristol

Mrs. Veronica M. (Almeida) Almeida, age 76, of Echo Farm Drive, Bristol, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at Miriam Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of Louis A. Almeida, her husband of 55 years. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Mary (Barboza) Almeida. 

Veronica was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1960, and then was the only one of hundreds of applicants to go on to the Katherine Gibbs School in Providence graduate in 1961. Later she returned to Roger Williams College to graduate with a double bachelor’s degree in both Accounting and Computer Science, Magna Cum Laude.

She was the executive secretary to the former Gov. John Chaffee for several years before raising her family. Veronica was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Bristol. 

She is survived in addition to her husband by three sons, Christopher J. Almeida (Julie) of Bristol, Stephen Almeida (Christine) of Tampa, Fla., and Keith L. Almeida (Robin) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren, Tyler, Olivia and Jessica Almeida; a great-granddaughter, Abigail; and a sister, Patricia Hunter of Bristol. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Almeida. 

Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, are Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at 10 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visitation will be Saturday morning only starting at 9 a.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
