Warren marks Veterans' Day Sunday

Speaking program, ceremony set for 11 a.m. on Town Common

Posted

Warren will come together for a patriotic salute to the town’s veterans, present and past, when the town marks Veterans' Day this coming Sunday — the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

School committee member and retired Lt. Col. John Bento will be the master of ceremonies for the town’s annual ceremony, which begins  11 a.m. on the Town Common. Col. Bento will be assisted by Dave McCarthy, commander of American Legion Post 104 of Warren.

That the ceremony takes place at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month is significant in that the armistice ending World War I took effect at that time, day and month in 1918. The end of World War I was commemorated in years after as Armistice Day – later becoming Veterans’ Day.

Boy Scout Troop 25 of Warren will both present and retire the Colors. Other participants from the community include Post 104, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 11 of Warren, the Warren Association of Vietnam Veterans, the Kickemuit Grange, the Newport County Junior Grange and Boy, Girl, Cub and Brownie Scouts.

A collation will follow in the Methodist Church opposite the Common. In case of poor weather, the ceremony will be held in the church hall.

Cmdr. Michael J. Riordan, professor of strategy, policy and ethics at the Naval War College in Newport, will be the speaker.

Cmdr Riordan graduated from the U.S Naval Academy, did advanced studies at Georgetown University and holds master’s degrees from Salve Regina University, Johns Hopkins University and the Naval War College in Newport. He is an expert in explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and has served with multiple EOD units and the IED (Improvised Explosive Devices) Task Force. He has also served at the Pentagon on the Chief of Naval Operations’ Strategic Study Group, with the intelligence community, and as senior Congressional advisor the Admiral James G. Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander/Europe. He also completed a Defense Legislative Fellowship in the office of the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, then chair of the Senate’s sea power subcommittee.

Commander Riordan is the recipient of the Vice Admiral Thomas R. Weschler Award for inspirational teaching at the Naval War College.
