PORTSMOUTH — Several special waste collection events will be held in town in the coming months.

There will be four electronic waste collections at Portsmouth High School from 9 a.m. to noon on the following dates: April 20, July 13, Sept. 14 and Nov. 16. These collections are open to all Rhode Island residents.

Electronic items will be accepted regardless of age or condition, including computers and appliance, phones, stereos and batteries. Coolant-containing items such as mini-fridges, air conditioners and dehumidifiers will be accepted for a $10 disposal fee.

Light bulbs, broken TV tunes, single-use batteries, furniture, paper/Styrofoam, chemicals/aerosol cans and paint will not be accepted.

A shredding event will take place from 9 a.m. until noon (or until the truck is full), on Saturday, May 4, at Clements’ Marketplace. This event is for Portsmouth residents only and residents are asked to limit themselves to three boxes per household.

The event is being sponsored by Clements’ Marketplace, the Portsmouth Business Association and the Town of Portsmouth.

A hard plastics collection will run from 8-11 a.m. (or until the container is full), on Saturday, May 18, at the Portsmouth Transfer Station. This event is limited only to those households that have a 2019 transfer station sticker.

The collection will accept items such as carts, crates, buckets, baskets, lawn furniture, trays, tubs, toters and small kiddie pools. Items that won’t be accepted include PVC pipe, Styrofoam, metal attachments, rubber, wood, toys with metal or batteries, child car seats, horticultural trays or polyethylene terephthalate soft plastic or bottles.

Collection acceptance guidelines will be available at multiple locations, including Town Hall, the senior center, the library and the transfer station.
