We must lead the way in supporting Rhode Island’s veterans

Thanking our veterans and active military service members for their sacrifice is a necessary and simple task. We need to back up our gratitude with action. Ensuring adequate care and support for more than 60,000 veterans across Rhode Island is a task that is much more complex.

Coming from a family whose identity has been and continues to be shaped by service to our country, I understand the commitment that is required to provide veterans and their families with the support they need for things like housing, employment, medical care, education and transportation. As a state representative, I will continue to assist and advocate for the expansion of public and nonprofit support for all service members, just as I have during my time on the Town Council.

With the state-of-the-art Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol is the foundation for building better long-term veteran care. Our community’s vets know that I’m always listening and ready to act.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
