Weight thrower wins state championship for Barrington

Barrington High School senior Bobby Colantonio continued to dominate his competition in the weight throw, finishing first in the event at the state championship indoor track meet this weekend.

Colantonio scored key points for the Eagles, helping Barrington to a seventh place finish. The local girls team grabbed a ninth place finish at states.

In the weight throw, Colantonio recorded a top distance of 75 feet, 11 inches, which was more than seven feet better than the next competitor's top mark.

Barrington's Mars Bishop also scored points for Barrington, finishing second in the 600 meter race. Bishop clocked a 1:23.52, while the winner, Hendricken's Harry Antone, clocked a 1:23.43. Bishop also ran to a fifth place finish in the 1,000 meter race.

Vasilios Meltsakos scored some points for Barrington in the high jump. Meltsakos cleared 5 feet, 8 inches and finished sixth in the event. Also, Barrington's 4x800 meter relay team finished sixth at states.

Girls finish ninth

Kate Zitzmann and her sister Julia helped the Barrington High School girls' indoor track team to a ninth place finish at the state meet.

Kate Zitzmann ran well in the 1,500, finishing in fifth place, while Julia grabbed a fourth place finish in the 1,000. Kate's time in the 1,500 was 4:47.50, while Julia clocked a 3:05.93 in the 1,000.

Briana Gausland showcased her speed in two events at the state meet. Briana ran to a third place finish in the 55 meter race, with a time of 7.45. In the 300 meter race, the Barrington girl finished fourth with a time of 42.77.

In the non-scoring pole vault event, Barrington's Lauren Richardson finished tied for fifth, after clearing eight feet.

New England qualifiers

Barrington's indoor track teams will have a handful of athletes participating in the New England Championships.

For the girls, Barrington's Kate Zitzmann will run in the 1,500, while Julia Zitzmann and Lily Gagliano have qualified to run in the 1,000.

Briana Gausland has qualified to race in the 300 meters and the 55 meters.

Barrington will also enter relay teams in the 4x200 and 4x400 events.

For the boys, Barrington will have Mars Bishop running in the 600 meter race, while Bobby Colantonio will compete in the weigh throw. The boys' 4x800 meter relay team also earned a spot at regionals.

Millrose Games

Barrington's Bobby Colantonio secured another first place finish in the weight throw recently, taking the top spot in the Millrose Games at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York. Colantonio's top throw of the day was 73 feet, 10 inches.
