Westport girls build 30-1 lead in lopsided win


After moving to a 26-0 lead at halftime, the Westport girls basketball team cruised to a 49-13 win over Avon on the Wildcats’ home court Thursday.

Avon didn’t score its first point until 6:22 in the third quarter — by then the score was 30-1.

The win boosted Westport’s record to 15-1 overall — the only loss was aganst West Bridgewater and the two teams square off again next Friday, Feb.17, this time on Westport’s home court.

Laila Silver led the Wildcats with 15 points; Laura Mendell, who left after a half after being poked in the eye, scored six points with seven steals and five assists.

Also scoring six points each were Hailey Charest, Jessica Carney, and Maeve Leary (first varsity game, first points); Kara Figueiredo scored 5, and Caelin Molloy, Mary Mcguill and Annie MacMaster had two apiece for Westport.

Win keeps hopes alive

The Westport boys also beat Avon, this game by a 56-31 score at Avon.

Nick Collins led Westport scorers with 19, Devyn Vitorino had 15, and Koby Porawski scored 11.

The loss put Westport at 8-9 in their division. They need to win two of their last three (Holbrook, Diman, West Bridgewater) to secure a playoff berth.
