Westport man charged with vehicular homicide after fatal Friday crash

A Dartmouth woman was killed and a Westport man faces charges after a two-car crash on Route 6 about a half mile west of the Dartmouth line on Friday at about 6:25 p.m.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s office identified the victim Saturday as 73-year-old Geraldine Correia of Dartmouth.

She was driving her 2003 Toyota Corolla in a westbound lane when investigators say her car was struck from behind by a 2010 Ford Escape driven by Robert J. Hansen, 62, of 1 Maynard St., Westport — a location close to the crash site. Her car swerved across the median and flipped into the eastbound lanes.

Ms. Correia was thrown from her car and was discovered in the median. Alerted by several 911 calls, rescuers rushed her to Charlton Memorial Hospital but she was pronounced dead there at 7:03 p.m.

Mr. Hansen, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, said DA spokesman Gregg Miliote, has been charged with motor vehicle homicide involving operation under the influence of alcohol, as well as negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

He was held on $50,000 cash bail and faces arraignment on Monday in Fall river District Court.
