Westport’s SADD students seek funds for Pittsburgh conference

The Westport Junior Senior High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chapter is raising money to attend a trip to the 2016 SADD National Conference in Pittsburgh, Penn., that will take place June 25-29, 2016.

“SADD Students Against Destructive Decisions is a youth-led organization that encourages students to empower their peers to make positive, even life saving decisions in all aspects of their lives whether behind the wheel, avoiding drugs or alcohol, or standing up to bullies. The students involved in SADD are role models in their school and community,” the group said.at will make our chapter more effective in our own community.” (SADD website)

Westport’s SADD Chapter is already active. Activities they’ve organized include:

• Yearly health fair

• Grim Reaper Day (showing impact of accidental deaths in teens)

• To Write Love on Her Arms Day (self-harm awareness)

●  Rainbow Ribbon Initiative (LGBT awareness and support)

●  Yearly prom campaign.

The group hopes that attending the 2016 SADD National Conference will lead to:

• Gaining a better understanding of our role in the school and in the community

• Learning from experts in the field

• Expanded initiatives to include developmentally appropriate programs and
activities at the Westport Junior High School

• Additional activities at the Westport Senior High School (examples include the Red Thumb Campaign and the Distractology Trailer which both campaign against texting and driving).
