Wildcat girls beat Diman in tourney opener

Westport girls finally found a bit of daylight in Diman’s defense Wednesday and pulled out a late-game first-round playoff victory.

The win moved the sixth seed Wildcats (15-4) on to a 6:30 p.m. game at the powerful third-seed Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech which beat Bishop Connolly with ease, 87-37.

Points were hard to come by throughout for both teams, especially in the first half which ended in a 14-14 tie. Staggered midway through

that first half, Westport responded with a seven point run with baskets by Ashyln Silva, Reaghan Tripp and Hailey Charest.

Westport, which had played stout defense all evening, picked up that defensive pace in the fourth quarter with the game still in doubt.

That led to a rash of Diman turnovers and a timely scoring run for Westport.

Kara Figuerido sank the first three-pointer of the game to  give Westport a 30-26 lead with just over 5 minutes to play, bringing the Wildcats crowd to its feet.

Laura Mendell then hit another with just under 4 minutes left, Charest sand a free throw and Figuerido hit another two-point shot to give Westport an 8-point lead, the night’s biggest, with 1:30 to play.

Seventh grader Mendell was the game’s high scorer with 19 points. She also played ferocious defense, coming up with seven steals. Charest added 6  points for Westport.

The teams had split their two regular season meetings. Diman won the first game by one point back in December; Westport roared back a couple weeks later to win by 29.
