William 'Bill' E. Lansing, 97, formerly of Barrington

William "Bill" E. Lansing, age 97, passed away peacefully in his assisted-living home in Manassas, Va. on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017. Bill was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., on March 1, 1920. He was married over 50 years to the late Lucille (Lu) Lansing. They had three children together: Bill Jr., Marilu (deceased), and Bob (deceased). Bill Lansing is survived by his son, Bill Jr. and his wife Terri, his son-in-law, Donald (Marilu's husband), four grandchildren and their families which include four great-grandchildren with a fifth on its way.

Bill and Lucille were married in Cocoa Beach, Fla. in 1944. Bill began his career as a Navy pilot in World War II. He earned a business degree at Northwestern University and pursued a career in the toy business at Sears Roebuck for 25 years. Bill ended his career in Barrington, where he worked at Hasbro for another 25 years. Bill moved to Manassas, Va., in 2011 where he could be near his son Bill Jr. and his family.

Bill was an active member of his church, a member of the Franciscan Order, and also active in the scouting program.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Barrington, with a Mass of Christian Burial and burial at Forest Chapel Cemetery.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
