William Freitas Jr., 72, of Westport, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at home.  He was the husband of Madeleine J. (Boucher) Freitas.  Born in Fall River, he was son of the late William and Hilda (Miranda) Freitas.

William Freitas Jr., 72, Westport

William Freitas Jr., 72, of Westport, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at home.  He was the husband of Madeleine J. (Boucher) Freitas.  Born in Fall River, he was son of the late William and Hilda (Miranda) Freitas.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served his country in the United States Navy.  Prior to retirement, Mr. Freitas was a firefighter for the City of Fall River.  He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport.

Including his wife, survivors include a son, Dr. William P. Freitas and his wife Rebecca of North Kingstown, RI; a sister, Deborah Dean and her husband John of Naples, Maine; three grandchildren, Hunter, Ellsie and Griffin Freitas; and several nieces and nephews.  He was the brother of the late Jacqueline Farrell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Fallen Fall River Firefighters Memorial Scholarship Fund, Attn: Chief Roger St. Martin, 140 Commerce Dr., Fall River, MA 02720 or Potter League for Animals, P.O. Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.

Arrangements were held under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
