Retired engineer loved drag racing and adored his dogs

William M. Hatzell, 62, of Warren, passed away Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017. He was the son of the late Willard L. and Jeanie A. (Matera) Hatzell; husband of Gail Lyman-Hatzell; father of Kirstin A. Hatzell; nephew of Matthew and Palma Matera; and cousin of Aurelia Granieri, and Laura and Steven Matera.

William had worked as a field service engineer for Emerson Process Management before retiring. 'Hatz' was very grateful to be able to spend nearly all of this past summer outside, working on his land. Nighttime would find him outside still, with a fire, accompanied by at least one of his dogs, who all adored him. One of his greatest joys was drag racing, and he had wonderful friends who shared that passion. During his work years, he traveled so much, far and often, that being able to settle in Warren brought him true contentment.

A funeral service for William will be held Saturday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. in the Pontarelli-Marino Home, 971 Branch Ave., Providence. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Warren Rescue Squad, 1 Joyce St., Warren, RI 02885. See www.pontarellimarinofunerals.com.
