William W. Kirby, 76, passed away October 8, 2016, with his loving family by his side. Born on July 10, 1940, in Fall River, Mass., to the late Norman and Martha Kirby, he grew up on a farm in Westport and was a welder before moving to and settling in Waldo, Maine in 1973.

Bill was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. In the 1970s he established his own trap-stock business, Kirby’s Trap-stock Mill. He spent many years on the Penobscot Bay as a lobsterman. One of his passions was logging with his skidder. His biggest enjoyment was spending time with his wife, Joan, at their camp on East Grand Lake. He enjoyed ice fishing and cutting and splitting firewood there.

Surviving are his dear wife of 42 years, Joan Kirby of Waldo; his sons, William “Bill” Kirby III and his wife Lori-Ann of Waldo, and Norman Kirby and his wife April of Montville; his grandchildren, Morgan Kirby, Crystle Leonard, Neil Kirby, Kendra Kirby, Saige Kirby and Olivia Kirby; his great-grandchildren, Jack and Carter Leonard; his sister, Wilma Woodruff of Westport; and his nephews, Mark Reed, Scott Ferreira and Kevin Ferreira. He was predeceased by his sister Zola Reed.

He was buried in Maine

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
