Young Eagles tennis team reaches semifinals

Barrington girls tennis team included six new starters

Members of the Barrington High School girls tennis team surpassed their coach's expectations this season — finishing regular season with a 9-3 record and pushing deep into the Division I playoffs.

The Eagles' impressive run ended on Friday in the Division I semifinals, when the local team lost to LaSalle Academy 4-0. The undefeated Rams went on to win the Division I championship on Sunday.

In the semifinals, Barrington High School's Kate Robertson lost her match at number one singles, 6-1, 6-1, while singles player Lauren Jay also lost in straight sets. The Eagles' double team of Hope Vetromile and Eve Stockwell lost 6-3, 6-0, and the team of Julia Stanchina and Alison Kostas also lost in straight sets.

Barrington High School coach Betsy Brenner said the loss did not sour what has been an impressive season for her team.

"They played their hearts out against LaSalle and though we lost, the girls played well, fought hard, and ended the season knowing they were one of the top Division One teams in the state and very excited for next year," said Coach Brenner.

"At the beginning of the season I thought this would be a rebuilding year with only one player in the same position as last year and six new starting players, but the girls literally improved with every match they played and earned their state semifinal finish."

Barrington opened last week with a 6-1 win over Cranston West. The victory pushed Barrington's regular season record to 9-3 and served as a warm-up for the Eagles' playoff quarterfinal match against Mt. St. Charles.

Barrington had lost to the Mounties 4-3 during the regular season, but rolled to a 4-0 win over Mt. St. Charles in the playoff showdown.

Barrington's Kate Robertson, a freshman who played in the number one singles position all season long, won her match against the Mounties. Marie Chanfrau also won her singles match, and the doubles teams of Hope Vetromile and Eve Stockwell and Hailey Walter and Meghan McDermott all won in straight sets.

Beth Wang and the doubles team of Julia Stanchina and Alison Kostas also recorded straight set wins seconds later, but in the playoffs, the match officially ends when one team wins four matches.

"Ever since our loss to Mount in the first match of the season, I had hoped for another opportunity to play them. This time our girls were experienced and confident, using everything they learned this season, to beat Mount St Charles decisively," said Coach Brenner.

The Eagles' coach said she was very pleased with the effort her team put forth all season long.

"I am so proud of all they accomplished this season," she said.
