WESTPORT — Yellow rubber ducks by the thousand are in their final week of training for the Saturday, April 13, Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary Duck Derby.
At 2:15 p.m. that day they will ride the incoming tide up the pond entrance channel — the fastest to do so wins dinner for two, anywhere in the world including airfare and two nights lodging.
Last year, over 5,400 adopted ducks participated in the derby, and the winning duck went with its adoptive family to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.
In addition to the grand prize, there are nearly 50 other prizes for which the ducks will compete. .
Since this is the Duck Derby’s “lucky year 13, Mass Audubon is celebrating with a special sales promotion.
On race day, August 14, purchase a box of Lucky 13 Quackers and organizers will thow in a “flock of five feisty racers” free. Ducks are on sale through 2 p.m. on race day (Saturday). Post-race festivities will take place on Sunday, Aug. 14, on the grounds near the Horseneck Road, Westport, field station at the sanctuary from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include a $5 barbecue lunch, games and crafts for kids, educational exhibits, live music, a video replay of the race, a silent auction, and live plant auction.
This year’s silent auction includes some noteworthy prizes including trips to the Caribbean and Central America, tickets to a white shark and whale cruise, a pair of kayaks and more.
As the grand prize and all other prizes are sponsored and/or donated, all derby proceeds will be used to support programs at Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.
Mass Audubon protects 36,500 acres of land throughout Massachusetts, saving birds and other wildlife, and making nature accessible to all. As Massachusetts’ largest nature conservation nonprofit, its wildlife sanctuaries located in cities and towns include 20 nature centers and welcome over half a million visitors annually.
