Tigers finally take down Rogers on Thanksgiving Day

Posted

Tiverton broke a six-game Thanksgiving Day losing streak and won for the first time against D-I rival Rogers Thanksgiving morning.

The Tigers took the 10 a.m. home game by a score of 20-13.

Senior quarterback Stephen Gacioch earned game MVP honors with his performance through the air, rushing and on defense. As a passer he gained 134 yards on an efficient 16-for-22 with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed for the game’s final touchdown.

Fellow senior Brett Silvia rushed for two touchdowns and was also a force on defense.

The game did not get off to a promising start for the Tigers as Rogers marched down the field 63 yards in eight plays for a quick touchdown and lead.

Tiverton replied with a good drive of its own but that ended close to the Rogers goal line.

Rogers managed nothing on its next possession and Tiverton opened the second quarter with a quick drive resulting in a short Perez rushing touchdown (missed extra point).

That 7-6 Rogers lead held until halftime.

The Tigers roared out of the break with a drive and touchdown that was nullified by a holding call.

A quick fumble recovery put Tiverton back in business in Rogers territory. Perez ran the ball into the Rogers end zone from four yards out and then ran in a two-point conversion to put Tiverton up 14-7 late in the third quarter.

Rogers wasn’t done, however, replying with a touchdown scoring drive. Tiverton held on to a 14-13 lead when Alex Byron stymied a Rogers two-point conversion effort with a tackle just shy of the goal line.

Gacioch gave Tiverton some late-game breathing room when he ran the ball in from 21 yards out to push the lead to 20-13 (missed extra point).

Tigers defender Brandon Peixoto iced the game with an interception to end Rogers’ final threat.

The victory by DIII Tiverton over DI Rogers helped ease the sting of the Tigers’ early exit from the playoffs after losing a big lead.

Tiverton ends the season at 8-2 while Rogers falls to 2-9.

Tiverton finishes its season 8-2, Rogers 2-9.
